The Landscape of Interior Design training and practice is about to change in Kenya with the introduction of the Built Environment Practitioners Act. The Act is spearheaded by the Ministry responsible for the Built Environment Professional. It proposes to repeal Cap 525 that established BORAQs to accommodate Interior Designers and its related paraprofessionals in the Built Environment. Objectively the act shall register Practitioners and Technicians in the Built Environment. With established chapter of Interior Designers in the board, the functions and powers of the chapter shall deal with issues that regard to the practice and specialists areas of Interior Design. Persons and firms of Interior Design Practice and their related paraprofessionals and specialists areas shall require registration to practice as Interior Designer. The word “Interior Designer”,” Interior Designing” and such related words shall be protected under the act and shall be used by or applied to persons or bodies fulfilling the requirements set thereof. It’s important to note that Section 44 states that a person shall not employ or continue employ any person to offer interior design services or work if that person is not registered. The act provides for punitive measures to enforce and hold accountable those deemed violating this provision.
The journey to regulatory framework lane of Interior Design starts with being a professional or technician member of Interior Designers Association of Kenya (IDAK). The association notes that section 22 of the act says that ….”No person shall be registered as Interior Designer unless that person is a Member of relevant professional body recognized by the Board …”( In this case IDAK)
IDAK as a Professional Body is guided by a Constitution, Set of By- Laws, regulations governing Executive Committee and various registration categories as well as Principles of Professional Conduct and to the Code of Conduct Manual. Also the Association has Academic and Mentorship programme as well as Continuous Professional Development Training programme for Skill Development and Career Progression. IDAK has a strategic plan guide towards establishing professionalism within this field. Such an effort towards establishing a regulatory framework in interior design field goes a long way in being an equal partner in the built environment.

The governance and management of IDAK is guided by best principles of practice of similar associations in Kenya as well as the State Department of Public Works ( where Interior Design in Government is domiciled ) providing Guidance and Oversight Role . Also, Professional recognition, Information sharing, networking and partnership towards the betterment of this Profession forms the basis of introducing you to IDAK. The Association take note of you as a key stakeholder in Interior Design Profession.
It’s decided that time for Interior Designers to position themselves best in the Built environment is NOW. Start the 1000 miles with the step of making enquiry into joining IDAK where you belong. The association welcomes you anytime you intend to join. By you being a member, a united professional front is built for better being of the profession.
